1996 Boasso Barolo Gabutti Serralunga Piedmont Italy
The 1996 Barolos that we've tasted tend to be more approachable at this early stage than the 1995s. The Boasso Gabutti is especially so and can be enjoyed now with hearty fare or simple grilled meats, especially beef and lamb.
Price: $53,00

1996 Gaja Barolo Sperss Piedmont Italy
Although only produced since the 1988 vintage, Angelo Gaja’s Barolo Sperss is considered one of the benchmark wines of the appellation. As in Gaja’s other reds, stainless steel fermentation and barrique aging refine the power and tannin of the Nebbiolo grape. This 1996 begs at least a decade in the cellar and will easily keep well over the next 15 years. Availability is extremely limited.
Price: $199,00

1996 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Costa Russi Piedmont Italy
1996 was a watershed vintage for Angelo Gaja’s three single-vineyard Barbaresco wines. No longer will these wines carry the DOCG appellation Barbaresco; instead, the wines will bear the less specific DOC appellation Langhe Nebbiolo, indicating the Piedmont region and grape variety from which the wines were made. Gaja believes his single-vineyard wines -- Sori Tilden, Sori San Lorenzo, and Costa Russi -- had begun to overshadow his regular Barbaresco, thus necessitating the change. Costa Russi is the biggest of Gaja’s three single vineyards and the most forward of the bunch. (A "costa" is the side of a sun-facing hill; Gaja purchased this vineyard from the Russi family in 1950.) This Costa Russi comes from the terrific 1996 vintage and shows great elegance along with rich, ripe fruit. The wine will be best enjoyed from 2006-2035. A mere 130 cases were imported into the United States.

1996 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sori San Lorenzo Piedmont Italy
1996 was a watershed vintage for Angelo Gaja’s three single-vineyard Barbaresco wines. No longer will these wines carry the DOCG appellation Barbaresco; instead, the wines will bear the less specific DOC appellation Langhe Nebbiolo, indicating the Piedmont region and grape variety from which the wines were made. Gaja believes his single-vineyard wines -- Sori Tilden, Sori San Lorenzo, and Costa Russi -- had begun to overshadow his regular Barbaresco, thus necessitating the change. Gaja’s Sori San Lorenzo ("sori" means hilltop with a southern exposure; San Lorenzo is the patron saint of the nearby city of Alba) is the most powerful and usually the most austere of his three single-vineyard Nebbiolo wines. Hailing from the outstanding 1996 vintage, this firmly structured and deeply concentrated wine should not even be touched for at least 10-15 years, and it has the potential to last for up to 40 years. Only 130 cases were imported for the United States market.

1996 Gaja Sori Tildin Langhe Nebbiolo Piedmont Italy
1996 was a watershed vintage for Angelo Gaja’s three single-vineyard Barbaresco wines. No longer will these wines carry the DOCG appellation Barbaresco; instead, the wines will bear the less specific DOC appellation Langhe Nebbiolo, indicating that the wine was made from Nebbiolo grown in the Piedmont's Langhe region. Gaja believes his single-vineyard wines -– Sori Tilden, Sori San Lorenzo, and Costa Russi -– had begun to overshadow his regular Barbaresco, thus necessitating the change. Among Gaja’s three single-vineyard Nebbiolo wines, Sori Tilden has the uncanny ability to display both wonderful elegance and powerful complexity. This vineyard, which has been in Gaja’s family since 1934, is 890 feet above sea level. "Sori" refers to a hilltop with southern exposure and Tilden was the nickname of the previous owner. Sori Tilden can age 30 years or more in a great vintage such as 1996. Only 130 cases were exported to the United States.

1996 Icardi Barolo Parej Piedmont Italy
Claudio Icardi says, "Robert Parker likes one style of wine: big, dark, and tannic. Gambero Rosso (the Italian Wine Spectator) likes another. The people like my wines because they give great pleasure!" The pleasure is derived from soft tannins and the lack of high acidity typically found in Nebbiolo grapes of Barolo. A mere 600 cases of this superb wine were produced. Enjoy it over the next 15 years.
Price: $59,95
