1996 Ch. Léoville Poyferré St. Julien Bordeaux France
Chateau Leoville Poyferre lies directly across the road from its more famous second-growth cousin, Chateau Leoville las Cases. There was a time when Leoville Poyferre didn’t really belong in the same neighborhood, but a series of phased investments in 1979 and 1994 has produced amazing results -- beginning with this age-worthy wine from the 1996 vintage. Enormous and powerful, but extremely closed at present, the 1996 Leoville Poyferre will require 10-25 years of cellaring to come into its prime.
Price: $65,00

1996 Ch. Mouton-Rothschild Pauillac Premier Cru Bordeaux France
This magnificent chateau is the darling of Bordeaux. More people visit this property and its spectacular wine museum than any other location in the region. The 1996 is a blend of 72 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 percent Merlot, and 8 percent Cabernet Franc. It is an amazing, dark, opulent, and massively structured wine that seems to improve with each new bottle opened. While lovely now, it will be at its best in 10-20 years. A true collector’s item.
Price: $249,95

1996 Ch. Pontet Canet Pauillac Bordeaux France
The name of this property dates back to 1725 when Jean-Francois Pontet, the governor of Medoc, added his name to his Canet estate. Once known as a brutally tannic and austere wine, the style of Pontet Canet has softened over the years as the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon has dropped from 75 percent to 63 percent (the balance being 32 percent Merlot and 5 percent Cabernet Franc). Nevertheless, this 1996 is extremely long-lived and shows classic Pauillac qualities reminiscent of its famous neighbor Mouton Rothschild. Best consumed in 5-25 (or more!) years.
Price: $65,00

1996 Chateau Beau-Séjour Bécot St. Emilion Premier Grand Cru Bordeaux
Beau-Sejour Becot is among the elite producers in St. Emilion, yet it remains one of the most reasonably priced. This wine is a blend of 70% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1996 vintage is especially intense and powerful and would benefit from another 5 to 15 years in the bottle.
Price: $59,95

1996 Chateau Canon La Gaffeliere St. Emilion France
Considerable investments have been made in this property since Count Joseph-Hubert von Neipperg purchased the chateau in 1971. The count’s son Stephan has been in charge since 1985 and the estate is now one of the darlings of the appellation. The style here is a very dark-colored wine with an impressive rich extract of ripe berry fruit, toasty/smoky oak, and balanced tannins. Charming now, but it will improve over the next 10-15 years.
Price: $59,95

1996 Chateau Clerc Milon Pauillac Bordeaux France
This chateau is owned by the Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and the vineyards are ideally situated between Mouton-Rothschild and Lafite-Rothschild. The 1996 Clerc Milon (51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc) is a rich, succulent wine that will hold for a decade or more.
Price: $59,95

1996 Chateau Cos Labory St. Estephe Bordeaux France
This fifth-growth estate, on a strong comeback since 1990, abuts the more famous second-growth Chateau Cos d’Estournel. (In fact, in the 1840s the two properties fell under the same ownership.) The 1996 is a blend of 50 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 percent Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot. Its irresistible now, but with its deep color, firm tannins, and great structure, should cellar well for 10 years.
Price: $35,00

|
1996 Chateau Leoville-Barton St. Julien Bordeaux France
A marvelous second-growth Bordeaux with fine concentration and complexity, the 1996 is 72 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 percent Merlot, and 8 percent Cabernet Franc. This is a blockbuster with huge, dark berry fruit, earth, spice, and sweet oak. Be patient, give it at least 6-7 years before opening, and cellar some for drinking over the next 30 years.
Price: $79,95

|
1996 Chateau Leoville-Las-Cases St. Julien Bordeaux France
If there were to be another first-growth Bordeaux named, most bets would be on Leoville Las Cases. This chateau has been on a roll of late, as demonstrated by this profound wine from the outstanding 1996 vintage. This wine is unbelievably rich and massive, yet balanced throughout. It’s one of the top wines of the vintage, if not the decade, and should be cellared for at least 8-25 years.
Price: $225,00

|
1996 Chateau Monbousquet St. Emilion Grand Cru Bordeaux
A Chateau that has really shown what great wine it can produce in the last few vintages. Monbousquet has gone from a somewhat sleepy producer to a serious contender, ready to take on the best in St. Emilion. The 1996 is a rich and powerful wine that will require and reward extended cellaring of 10 to 15 years.
Price: $59,95
