Denis Mortet is an exciting new winemaking star in Burgundy. His 1997s are fabulous wines made from tiny, black-colored grapes. Mortet claims, "I have never seen more visually attractive grapes." It follows that his Clos Vougeot is dense and compact with spicy, blackberry fruit intertwined with earthy, licorice notes. Drinkable now, the wine will gradually improve with another 3-8 years in the bottle.
