1997 Domaine d'Auvenay Auxey-Duresses Les Clous Burgundy
The medieval farm estate Domaine d'Auvenay is in the hills above St. Romain, west of Auxey-Duresses, and has grown grapes for centuries. D'Auvenay is owned by Domaine Leroy in Vosne-Romanee; they approach the growing and crafting of these villages wines with the same artisanal dedication that Leroy brings to their grand cru wines. The "Les Clous" is a concentrated wine with the ability to age for five or more years.
Price: $55,00

1997 Domaine d'Auvenay Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru Burgundy
Chevalier-Montrachet is one of the white grand cru satellites surrounding Le Montrachet in the Cotes de Beaune. Chevalier sits uphill from the big M on more meager soil and has a leaner, elegant frame. Not massive enough to sit on the throne, Chevalier is instead the noble guardian to the king of the hill. Clearly a wine of great depth and reserve -- arguably the most dependable of all the sub-Montrachets. Hold this wine for at least five years; it will age comfortably for five, or more, beyond that.
Price: $599,95

1997 Domaine d'Auvenay Criots-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru Burgundy France
Criots-Batard-Montrachet is an interesting sliver of vineyard just to the south of Batard and within spitting distance of Montrachet itself. Only a little over four acres in size, it has less heft than Batard and more lemon acidity; this is a wine of finesse and delicacy of touch, yet still a powerful wine that will age for five years.
Price: $499,95

1997 Domaine d'Auvenay Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru Burgundy France
Gevrey-Chambertin has eight grand cru vineyards within its boundaries, of which Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Beze are clearly the leaders of the pack. Mazis-Chambertin, which borders Clos de Beze on its northern boundary, is often their equal. Totaling just over 21 acres, Mazis is a shallow-soiled, pebbley site that produces wine of great power and intensity -- but a bit more delicate and graceful than the big boys. -Burke Owens

1997 Domaine Jean Marc Millot Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru Les Suchots Burgundy France
Suchots is the largest premier cru site in the village of Vosne Romanee. It is sandwiched between three great grand crus: Romanee St. Vivant and Richebourg to the south, and Echezeaux to the north. Wines from Suchots are usually well-balanced and elegant wines with black fruit, perfume, and a silky finish.

1997 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru Burgundy France
This wine displays the typical, lovely Domaine Leflaive qualities of apple-spice, honey, hazelnut, and mineral with rich body, great depth, and fine balance. The wine will be best consumed in 6-12 years, when the youthful flavors will have evolved and become more complex, and the wonderful, lush, round texture characteristic of Chevalier-Montrachet will be manifest.
Price: $295,00

Domaine Leflaive's 1997 Puligny Montrachet Clavoillons offers enticing aromas of peach, honey, and coconut. The texture is beautifully lush and round, and the finish quite long. Another 3-5 years in the bottle will add even more body and complexity to this already lovely Chardonnay.

1997 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Pucelles Burgundy France
Domaine Leflaive's noble commitment to biodynamic viticulture (an organic approach to grape growing that is gaining respect among prominent producers worldwide) has resulted in a splendid range of '97 white Burgundies. Leflaive is the largest landholder in the Premier Cru vineyard of Les Pucelles. This ideally situated site lies directly adjacent to the Grand Cru Batard Montrachet. The '97 Les Pucelles is impeccably balanced and concentrated with flavors of pippin apple, honeysuckle, hazelnut and a fascinating mineral aftertaste. This impressive wine will improve tremendously over the next few years and hold for at least a decade.
