1996 Ch. Ducru Beaucaillou St. Julien Bordeaux France
This famous property is named after its very beautiful (beau) gravelly (cailloux) vineyard, and Bertrand Ducru who became its owner in 1795. The chateau makes classic, long-lived wines that rank among the finest in Bordeaux. The 1996 Ducru Beaucaillou is a phenomenal, rich, yet elegantly balanced wine that will keep for 20 years or more when properly cellared.
Price: $150,00

1996 Ch. Grand Puy Lacoste Pauillac Bordeaux France
A worthy follow-up to the magnificent 1995 Grand Puy Lacoste, the 1996 is deep, rich, and massive with complex, ripe, jammy fruit, sweet toasty oak, minerals, and plentiful tannins. This beauty may even surpass the wonderful 1982 vintage at this estate and will be best consumed in 5-25 years.
Price: $99,95

1996 Ch. Lafite-Rothschild Pauillac Bordeaux France
Only 38 percent of Lafite's entire 1996 harvest made it into the final blend, which comprises 83 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 8 percent Merlot, 8 percent Cabernet Franc, and 1 percent Petit Verdot. This severe selection and the high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon yielded an extraordinary, powerful, yet backward wine. The 1996 Lafite Rothschild will require at least another five years before it should be touched, and it will easily last an additional 20 years or more when properly cellared. A true collector's item.
Price: $395,00

1996 Ch. Lafon Rochet St. Estephe Bordeaux France
The reputation of a St. Estephe wine is typically tough, tannic, and slow to come around. Lafon Rochet used to be such a wine, and while still quite age-worthy, the style here is now less angular as more Merlot is included in the blend. The 1996 Lafon Rochet is a marvelous, robust, highly extracted wine that can be enjoyed now with a thick filet mignon, or cellared for another 15 years.
Price: $45,00

1996 Ch. Lagrange St. Julien Bordeaux France
Suntory of Japan purchased Chateau Lagrange in 1983 and since then the quality and reputation of the winery have been turned around. Investments went into new vineyards, a new winemaking facility, and a new barrel-aging cellar. Nowadays, at least half the wine is sold as the second label, Les Fiefs de Lagrange, to ensure quality at the top. The 1996 Lagrange is a textbook St. Julien -- powerful yet elegant with dark fruits, sweet toasty oak, earth, and the structure to last another 15 years or more.
Price: $55,00

1996 Ch. Latour Pauillac Premieru Cru Bordeaux France
Chateau Latour is the ultimate example of power, grace, and harmony in a purely masculine style. The typical Latour is dense and firmly constructed and pays big dividends to those who give it the requisite cellaring. This bottle of 1996 Latour has the structure to age well for another 20 years, so try to wait until 2005 -- at least -- to enjoy it.
Price: $375,00

1996 Ch. Léoville Poyferré St. Julien Bordeaux France
Chateau Leoville Poyferre lies directly across the road from its more famous second-growth cousin, Chateau Leoville las Cases. There was a time when Leoville Poyferre didn’t really belong in the same neighborhood, but a series of phased investments in 1979 and 1994 has produced amazing results -- beginning with this age-worthy wine from the 1996 vintage. Enormous and powerful, but extremely closed at present, the 1996 Leoville Poyferre will require 10-25 years of cellaring to come into its prime.
Price: $65,00

1996 Ch. Pontet Canet Pauillac Bordeaux France
The name of this property dates back to 1725 when Jean-Francois Pontet, the governor of Medoc, added his name to his Canet estate. Once known as a brutally tannic and austere wine, the style of Pontet Canet has softened over the years as the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon has dropped from 75 percent to 63 percent (the balance being 32 percent Merlot and 5 percent Cabernet Franc). Nevertheless, this 1996 is extremely long-lived and shows classic Pauillac qualities reminiscent of its famous neighbor Mouton Rothschild. Best consumed in 5-25 (or more!) years.
Price: $65,00

1996 Chateau Clerc Milon Pauillac Bordeaux France
This chateau is owned by the Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and the vineyards are ideally situated between Mouton-Rothschild and Lafite-Rothschild. The 1996 Clerc Milon (51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc) is a rich, succulent wine that will hold for a decade or more.
Price: $59,95

1996 Chateau Cos Labory St. Estephe Bordeaux France
This fifth-growth estate, on a strong comeback since 1990, abuts the more famous second-growth Chateau Cos d’Estournel. (In fact, in the 1840s the two properties fell under the same ownership.) The 1996 is a blend of 50 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 percent Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot. Its irresistible now, but with its deep color, firm tannins, and great structure, should cellar well for 10 years.
Price: $35,00
