1998 Hudelot-Noellat Nuit-St. Georges Premier Cru Murgers Burgundy France
Nuits-St. Georges somehow suffered the cruel fate of not having any grand cru vineyards to speak of. Fortunately, the top premier cru vineyards can, in the right hands, compete with the grand cru wines in a good vintage. Such is the case with the 1998 Murgers from Hudelot-Noellat. It displays layers of ripe red berry fruit and earthy complexities. While enjoyable now, it can be cellared over the next 7-10 years.
Price: $42,00

1998 Hudelot-Noellat Richebourg Grand Cru Burgundy France
Some believe Alain Hudelot’s rich, opulent, and aristocratic Richebourg to be among Burgundy’s greatest wines. This excellent 1998 will do nothing to disprove that theory. It can be enjoyed now (open and pour at least 30 minutes before serving) or cellared over the next 12-15 years.
Price: $179,00

1998 Hudelot-Noellat Romanee Grand Cru St.-Vivant Burgundy France
Romanee-St. Vivant is at the pinnacle of Burgundy’s grand cru vineyards. It takes its name from the priory of St. Vivant, which was offered as a gift to monks in 1232, and remained their property until the revolution. These wines are quintessential Burgundian Pinot Noir, and are renowned for their lavishly opulent fruit and great complexity. This 1998 from Hudelot can be enjoyed now or cellared for 12-15 years.

1998 Hudelot-Noellat Vosne Premier Cru Les Malconsorts Burgundy France
The adage "old vines make for better wines" holds especially true in Burgundy. Older vines yield Pinot Noir with added depth and dimension of complexity that's not found in wines made from younger vines. Alain Hudelot is proud, even downright protective, of his parcels of old vines in several of the finest Cote de Nuits vineyards. His Les Malconsorts is a perfect example old-vines Pinot, and in a vintage like 1998, the wine rivals grand cru quality. Enjoy it now or cellar it over the next 7-10 years.

1998 Hudelot-Noellat Vosne-Romanee Burgundy France
The village of Vosne-Romanee has been called the jewel of the Cote de Nuits for centuries. Today, its 500-odd residents all make their living with wine. Although the village is home to seven of Burgundy’s most fabulous grand cru vineyards, the village wines can often be among the best values to be found, and this 1998 from Hudelot will attest to that. It’s ripe berry, earth and spice notes will please now and over the next 5-7 years.
Price: $29,00

1998 Hudelot-Noellat Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru Les Beaumonts Burgundy France
Like many others in Burgundy, Alain Hudelot has bottled his wines unfined and unfiltered since the 1990 vintage. He believes that over-processing the wines strips them of crucial flavor elements and their character. Given the inherent delicate and subtle expression of the Pinot Noir grape, this would seem to be a no-brainer. Try the 1998 Les Beaumonts and see why unfiltered Burgundy should be the norm.

1998 Hudelot-Noellat Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru Les Suchots Burgundy France
Vosne-Romanee is perhaps unrivaled in France as the most remarkable wine-producing village. Though total production is relatively small, its grand cru vineyards can yield some of the most glorious red Burgundies —- and some of the world’s greatest red wines. This 1998 from the Les Suchots vineyard has all the ripe fruit and earthy complexity one could wish for. It will drink beautifully over the next 7-10 years.

1998 Jacques Prieur Grand Cru Clos Vougeot Burgundy France
In choosing any fine Burgundy, the producer is always the real bottom line. This is especially true with wines from Clos Vougeot, one of the region's largest grand cru vineyards, at some 125 acres. Dozens of producers make wine from it and not all are equal. This 1998 from Jacques Prieur is a superb example of what a grand cru vineyard and a fine producer can do together. Opulent yet densely extracted fruit, distinctive mineral tones, and firm but round tannins make it a candidate for 10-12 years in a good cellar.

1998 Jacques Prieur Grand Cru Le Musigny Burgundy France
Cistercian monks of nearby Citeaux first noted the legendary Musigny vineyard in 1110. It was found early on that this limestone and pebbly clay site expressed itself quite distinctly. Powerful, noble, seductive, and madly compelling, this wine has a myriad of aromas from dark and red fruits to wildflowers to spice and the smoldering musk of lovers. Sexy stuff indeed, the 1998 from Domaine Jacques Prieur is astounding wine that can age for decades.

1998 Jayer-Gilles Grand Cru Echezeaux Burgundy France
As far as great red Burgundy is concerned, the Echezeaux vineyard is considered prime real estate. The Domaine de la Romanee-Conti sold this particular parcel to the Jayer family years ago so they could purchase the part of La Tache they didn’t yet own. Jayer-Gilles 1998 Echezeaux is truly one of the stars of the vintage. Aged in 100 percent new oak, this is a powerful Pinot Noir with tremendous extract and weight that will be best between 2006 and 2015. Availability is extremely limited. Imported by Robert Kacher Selections.
