1998 Serafin Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Burgundy France
Christian Serafin is a quiet man who is dedicated to quality. Low yields, nearly all organic, minimal movement of the wine, and little use of sulfur are de rigueur here. His Gevrey Vieilles Vignes (old vines) is made from two parcels, one that borders the grand cru Griottes-Chambertin and another next to the premier cru Les Cazetiers. The vines are between 45 and 60 years old. The result is a lip-smacking good, seductive, smoky, meaty, and dark cherry flavored wine that will be wonderful now through 2008. 1998 Serafin Morey-St. Denis Premier Cru Millandes Burgundy France
Christian Serafin calls this wine a "smaller-scaled Clos de la Roche." It packs a lot of dark berry, mocha, and spicy/meaty flavors along with the requisite tannin structure to enable it to cellar through 2008. Serafin purchased this vineyard land, along with his Chambolle-Musigny Les Baudes, a few years ago from Pierre Amiot. The additions reflect an important expansion for the traditionally Gevrey-Chambertin-based Serafin, who is well on his way to stardom in the wine world. Imported by Robert Kacher Selections.

1999 Andrew Rich Pinot Noir Rose Willamette Valley Oregon
Andrew Rich has made a few Pinot in his time but we find this rose to be in a class of its own. His 1999 rose of Pinot Noir shows a brilliantly deep rosey pink hue and all the pretty cherry/apple/jasmine aromas one could wish for. Dry and medium bodied, this is a rose with so much charm (It is from the Willamette Valley, after all) that it can be enjoyed year round with picnic or at fireside or as an apperitif. Only 1,000 cases produced.
